Bad credit loan vs credit union loan

Updated November 7, 2026

If you can get one, a credit union loan is often cheaper than a bad credit loan from an online lender, because federal rules limit what a federal credit union can charge on its payday alternative loans. The trade off is that you must be a member, the amounts are smaller, and approval is still not promised. An online bad credit loan can be easier to ask for, but the price can be much higher.

Neither is automatically right. Here is how to compare them for your week.

How do the two compare?

The credit union figures come from two places. The federal regulation sets the first version at $200 to $1,000, with a term of one to six months and an application fee of no more than $20 (12 CFR 701.21, read November 7, 2026). The NCUA says the second version allows any amount up to $2,000, a term of one to 12 months, and a loan as soon as you establish membership (NCUA, read November 7, 2026). State chartered credit unions may run their own programs, so ask what yours offers.

When does a credit union loan make more sense?

Start by calling your local credit union and asking three things: do you offer a payday alternative loan, how long must I be a member, and what will it cost in dollars? Not every credit union offers these loans.

When might an online loan make more sense?

Even then, compare in dollars. The CFPB says a charge of 15 dollars per 100 borrowed is common on a payday loan, with a range of 10 to 30 dollars depending on state law, and that this comes to almost 400 percent APR over two weeks (CFPB, read November 7, 2026). Installment loans are priced differently, so always read the total to repay.

What should you compare in any offer?

  1. The amount you actually receive. Any fee taken out first reduces it.
  2. The total you repay. This is the clearest number on the page.
  3. The APR. Use it to compare loans of different lengths.
  4. The payment dates. Make sure each one falls after money comes in.
  5. What happens if you pay late. Look for late fees and any rollover terms.

Where does OppLending fit?

We are not a lender and we are not a credit union. We pass one free request to lenders in our network, and any offer comes from the lender itself. If a credit union can help you first, try that. If it cannot, you can send a request here and read whatever comes back before deciding.

Questions people also ask

What is a payday alternative loan?

It is a small loan some federal credit unions offer under federal rules. One version runs from $200 to $1,000 over one to six months, with an application fee of no more than $20. A newer version goes up to $2,000 over as long as 12 months.

Do I have to wait to join a credit union before borrowing?

It depends on the loan. The NCUA says a federal credit union can make the newer PALs II loan immediately once you establish membership. Other loans may have a waiting period, so ask the credit union before you join.
